Flat roofs take the full force of the UAE sun, and roof surfaces reach far higher temperatures than the air. Without insulation, that heat soaks into the slab and radiates into the rooms below well into the night. New buildings in Dubai must meet roof thermal performance requirements under the Al Sa'fat green building system, and many older buildings fall well short of them.
What is roof insulation, and how does it work?
Roof insulation is a layer of low-conductivity material, such as polyurethane foam or extruded polystyrene boards, installed on or within the roof to slow heat transfer. It lowers the roof's U-value (the rate of heat flow). Less heat reaches the ceiling below, so rooms stay cooler and air-conditioning uses less energy.
Insulation works best as part of a system. In an inverted (combo) roof, moisture-resistant XPS sits above the waterproofing and protects it. Spray PU foam can be applied over an existing roof and coated, avoiding strip-out. Reflective top coats add a further benefit by reducing how much heat is absorbed in the first place.
