MS pipe insulation with GRP cladding in Dubai and the UAE
ESA Technical Services LLC is a Dubai-based technical services company, established in 2006, specialising in GRP works, waterproofing, insulation and installation across the UAE. MS pipe insulation with GRP cladding combines our insulation and lamination skills in one service.
Along the UAE coast, summer dew points can be very high. Any pipe colder than the dew point, such as chilled water around 5–7°C, will sweat constantly unless its insulation stays sealed. Once moisture gets in, insulation loses performance and the steel underneath corrodes unseen. A laminated GRP jacket is a robust, seamless way to keep moisture out.
What is MS pipe insulation with GRP lamination?
MS pipe insulation with GRP lamination is a protective system for mild steel pipes. The steel is cleaned and primed against corrosion, insulated (for example with PU foam or preformed sections), sealed with a vapour barrier, then jacketed with glass-fibre and resin laminated in place and finished with a UV-stable top coat. The result is a hard, seamless, weatherproof cladding.
Compared with metal cladding, a laminated GRP jacket has no overlapping seams for water to track through, doesn't corrode, and can follow bends, tees and valves. It also takes knocks and foot traffic better than soft wraps. It's used for above-ground chilled-water and district cooling lines, process lines and hot lines where personnel protection is needed.
When do you need ms pipe insulation by grp lamination?
These are the signs and project triggers we see most often on UAE sites:
- Sweating chilled-water pipes. Dripping onto roofs, ceilings or equipment
- Corroded pipes under failed insulation. Wet, sagging or damaged lagging
- Outdoor pipe racks. Exposed to sun, rain, dust and salt air
- District cooling connections. Building-side chilled-water lines
- Hot process lines. Energy saving and burn protection
- Replacing damaged metal cladding. Dented, corroded or leaking jackets
Our step-by-step ms pipe insulation by grp lamination process
Survey
We record pipe sizes, lengths, operating temperatures, fittings and the condition of existing insulation and steel.
Removal of old insulation
Failed lagging and cladding are removed and disposed of, and the pipe surface is inspected for corrosion.
Surface preparation and priming
Rust and scale are removed by mechanical cleaning or blasting as specified, then an anti-corrosion primer or coating is applied.
Insulation
Insulation is applied to the designed thickness, such as sprayed or poured PU or preformed sections, tightly fitted at fittings and supports.
Vapour barrier
For cold lines, a continuous vapour barrier is applied so moisture can't migrate to the cold surface.
GRP lamination
Glass mat or woven cloth and resin are laminated around the insulation to form a continuous jacket, overlapping at fittings and terminations.
UV top coat and finishing
A pigmented UV-stable top coat is applied, with colour coding or banding if required. Terminations and supports are sealed.
Inspection
Jacket thickness, continuity and terminations are checked, and pipes are inspected in operation for any condensation.
Technical specifications
Values below are typical ranges. Final specifications are confirmed per project from drawings, operating conditions and the manufacturer's technical data sheets.
| Parameter | Typical specification |
|---|---|
| Pipe | Mild steel (MS/carbon steel), various diameters |
| Surface prep | Mechanical cleaning or blasting per specification; anti-corrosion primer |
| Insulation | PU (sprayed/poured/preformed) or as specified; thickness to prevent condensation |
| Vapour barrier | Continuous for cold service |
| GRP jacket | Laminated glass mat/cloth and resin, typically a few mm thick |
| Top coat | UV-stable pigmented top coat, colour coding optional |
| Service temperature | Chilled water to hot lines within the insulation's rated range |
Materials and methods
- Anti-corrosion primers: compatible with the insulation system
- Insulation: PU foam or preformed sections sized for the temperature and dew point
- Glass reinforcement and resin: for the laminated jacket
- UV top coat: for outdoor exposure
Benefits of ms pipe insulation by grp lamination
No condensation
Correct thickness and sealing keep the outer surface dry.
Corrosion protection
Primed steel under a sealed jacket stays protected.
Energy saving
Less heat gain into chilled water means lower cooling energy.
Weather- and UV-proof
A hard GRP skin handles sun, rain and dust.
Seamless
No overlapping metal seams for water to track through.
Robust and repairable
Resists knocks and can be patched by lamination.
Applications across the UAE
| Sector | Typical application | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| District cooling | Building connections, ETS rooms, rooftop lines | Condensation and energy control |
| Commercial buildings | Chiller and AHU pipework | Dry, protected pipes |
| Industrial | Process, glycol and hot oil lines | Durable, sealed jacketing |
| Utilities | Outdoor pipe racks | Weatherproof protection |
GRP jacket vs aluminium cladding
| Factor | Laminated GRP jacket | Aluminium cladding |
|---|---|---|
| Seams | Seamless | Overlaps and screws |
| Water ingress risk | Low | At seams if poorly sealed |
| Impact resistance | High | Dents easily |
| Corrosion | None | Galvanic/coastal corrosion possible |
| Fittings and valves | Follows shapes | Fabricated boxes |

MS Pipe Insulation by GRP Lamination: frequently asked questions
Why do my chilled-water pipes drip even though they're insulated?
Usually because moisture has penetrated the insulation through gaps, failed vapour barriers or damaged cladding, or because the thickness is insufficient for UAE humidity. Wet insulation loses effectiveness.
How thick should chilled-water pipe insulation be?
It depends on pipe size, fluid temperature and ambient conditions. It must keep the surface above the dew point. We size it for UAE design conditions or the project specification.
Can you insulate pipes while they're running?
External work is often possible on live lines. Surface preparation and priming may require a shutdown if heavy corrosion is present. We'll plan around operations.
Is GRP cladding suitable for hot pipes?
Yes, within the resin and insulation temperature limits. The insulation keeps the jacket far cooler than the pipe.
