GRP and waterproofing questions answered

GRP (glass reinforced plastic, also called FRP or fibreglass) is a composite of glass fibres bonded in resin. It is strong, lightweight and does not rust. That makes it ideal for water, sewage and chemical service in the UAE, where heat, humidity and salt quickly corrode steel and attack concrete.

GRP pipes also have a smooth bore that resists scaling and keeps pumping energy down, and GRP tanks are hygienic and easy to repair. With the right resin, such as vinyl ester for aggressive chemicals or potable-water-grade resin for drinking water, GRP is typically designed for a long service life. See our GRP pipe services.

It depends on diameter, length, jointing method and site access. A short plant-room run can take a few days, while a long buried pipeline is planned in phases over weeks. Testing and curing also add time: laminated joints must cure before the hydrostatic test.

Usually, yes. Most GRP tank leaks come from panel joints, sealant, bolts or local cracks, and they can be repaired by draining, cleaning, grinding and re-laminating with potable-water-safe resin. The tank is then refilled and monitored. Replacement is only needed when panels or the base structure have genuinely failed.

The most common causes are joint failures, poor bedding or ground movement, impact damage, pressure surges and ageing seals. Occasionally the cause is chemical attack when the wrong resin was specified for the fluid. Finding the root cause matters, because it decides whether a local repair will last.

For most exposed roofs, a liquid polyurethane membrane with a UV-stable top coat, or a combo roof system with insulation and a protective finish, performs best. These systems handle heat, UV and daily thermal movement. The final choice depends on the substrate, foot traffic, existing layers and budget.

Bituminous membranes work well when protected under screed or tiles. Acrylic coatings are a cost-effective way to refresh a sound roof. Compare them in our waterproofing systems table.

There is no single figure. Service life depends on the specified system, its thickness, the substrate, UV exposure, foot traffic and maintenance, and on the manufacturer's requirements. Protected systems (under screed, tiles or insulation) are shielded from the main ageing factors in the UAE: UV and heat. Exposed coatings are designed to be maintained and re-coated.

PU (polyurethane) waterproofing is a liquid applied cold that cures into a seamless, elastic membrane. Bituminous waterproofing uses factory-made sheets, usually torch-applied with overlapping seams, or bitumen-based coatings. PU suits complex, exposed roofs with many details. Bituminous membranes are robust and economical, especially below grade or under protection.

PU has no seams and follows shapes easily, but it needs a sound, dry substrate. Bituminous sheets tolerate rougher conditions but have seams that must be detailed carefully. Read about PU membranes and bituminous membranes.

Flat roofs, wet areas and podiums are flood-tested. The area is ponded with water, typically for 24–48 hours, and checked below for leaks before protection or tiling goes down. Linings may also be holiday (spark) tested where specified, and thickness is checked during application.

Testing before the system is covered is the cheapest point to find a defect. Afterwards it means breaking out finishes. Every ESA waterproofing job includes an appropriate test and record.

Yes. In low-rise buildings and villas, the roof is one of the largest sources of heat gain. Insulating it reduces the heat reaching the rooms below, so air-conditioning runs less. Actual savings depend on the existing roof, insulation thickness and how the building is used, but top-floor comfort usually improves noticeably.

PU (polyurethane) foam insulation is a closed-cell foam that is sprayed or injected on site. It expands, bonds to the surface and cures into a continuous layer with very low thermal conductivity. It has no joints and follows complex shapes, which makes it effective on roofs, walls, cold rooms, tanks and containers.
